BIO

Born and raised is Kansas City, Kansas, I am the product of District 500 School District.  My maternal grandmother, father and mother all attended the same school district.  My mother wanted one of her children to attend the same schools she did, and it just happened to me  Kealing Primary School, Stowe Elementary School, Northeast Junior High School and Sumner High School  all contributed to my sound educational background. I graduated in 1973 and matriculated to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, graduating in 1977,   immediately returned home and began my life.  Becoming a wife and mother was a lot to deal with so I settled for being just a mother.  My sons, Damon and Ryan are also products of District 500, also attending schools as close to where I did as I could get, graduating from the same schools as their Dad.    Two of my children’s finest moments is that both graduated college:  the University of Missouri and the University of Kansas.   My youngest with his wife, Meghan parent my grands Parker, Quinton and  Aubrey   My bonus children, both products of District 500, college graduates, and my youngest is married to Nicole, and are parents of Kari.   I am married to the wonderful Ronald Hopkins and we work together to make life work for us.

I was voted Most Loyal in High School.  I believe I have worked in both the post graduate work of our class as well with the Alumni Association.   It has been one of my joys to be affiliated with such a school’s with such a rich history.

My job is communicating the work of the Association whether it is an email, letter, etc.   If you have not received any communication from m in the last year, it’s probably because we don’t have your email or mailing information.  Dues are $40.00 a year and are due now for 2026.    I am  chairing the 2026 Somner in the City Convention.  Plans are underway but we need your help by joining the planning.  Contact me at gajettesgj@gmail.com. Sumner High School Alumni Association Ronald Harland, Sr.

New Project

BIO

Ronald Harland, Sr., aspired to own his own company one day, but almost did not make his dream of becoming an entrepreneur come true. A manager at his former job gave him some advice that helped him make up his mind. “He said, one thing you don’t want to do is get to the end of your life and have regrets about something you wish you had done,” said Harland.

In April 2002, Mr. Harland went after his dreams – opening the doors to eVolv Solutions, LLC, an Overland Park, Kansas headquartered office equipment provider of copiers and printers to mid- and large-size companies. As the president of the company, he oversaw the day-to-day operations of the business. His two sons, Ronald Harland II, and Eric Harland, work side-by-side with him in business. His wife, Patricia, also served as office manager during the business’s first four years of operation.

“It has been a wonderful but challenging experience – having the business and working with family to make it successful, he said. The company has acquired clients such as MetLife, Johnson & Johnson, Truman Medical Centers, Kansas City Power & Light, and Huntington Bank. In 2007, eVolv Solutions was named the #1 Fastest Growing Business in Kansas City by Ingram’s Magazine and was listed #80 in Inc. 500 during this same period.

Prior to starting his company, Ron worked for 26 years for Xerox Corporation, where he held the position of Global Account Manager, overseeing the company’s largest accounts, plus manufacturing assignments in Shanghai, China and assignments in Rochester, New York as Product Development Manager.

Ron was also a former Electronics Technician and Telemetry Specialist at Bendix Corporation, now Honeywell. He attributes his career path to the great foundation he obtained as a student at Sumner High School. “The three years of electronics training I received at Sumner High School enabled me to pass the Electronics Test at Bendix and begin making very respectable earnings right out of high school.

While working at Bendix, Ron attended classes at Kansas City, Kansas Junior College. He would later go on to earn a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts from Avila College. He completed the Kellogg Advanced Management for entrepreneurs at Northwestern University in 2003 and the Turk Advanced Management Training for Entrepreneurs at Burns & McDonald, sponsored by Dartmouth College in 2016.

He is a member of the National Minority Supplier Council, Heartland Black Chamber of Commerce, and a member of The Strategic Alliance Partners for Xerox, HP, Lexmark, and Brother Business Products.

What advice does he have for aspiring entrepreneurs? “First, you need to decide the type of business you want to start; doing something you already know makes it easier than embarking on an industry you know nothing about. Next, you want to develop a business plan and obtain the proper financing.”

Most of all, he said, “do not be afraid of failure” In anything you decide to do, you will fail at some facets along the way, but you will have other opportunities open and successes along the way. Each engagement will teach you something powerful that you will use for a lifetime.”
