General Meeting September 6, 2025, 11am
Kansas State Sunflower Room
Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 11 am by President Mike Hobson.
Opening prayer: Opening Prayer was given by Ollie Carroll.
Roll Call of Executive Committee: Those present: Mike Hobson, Ollie Carroll Granvile O’Neal, Robert Brady, Betty Maddox, Roy Robinson
Minutes: There were no minutes to approve
Correspondence: None
Financial Secretary Report: No report, we need to fill the position.
Treasurer Report: None
Vice President Report: None
President’s Report: We need to increase our membership. We should reach out to former members from years back’ and help bring them back. People are asking if I pay dues what do I get for my money.
We should have a “Meet and Greet” this year, which would help to keep people informed.
People asked for an in-person meeting, “Where are you?” The November meeting will be on Zoom due to the weather starting to get cold. In good weather we will have meetings in person.
Courtesy and Hospitality: A condolence, card and flowers were sent to Marie Morris in the passing of her sister, the cost was 87.30. Better communication is needed. Mike Hobson had surgery. Adolph Favors, Class of 1962 died.
Scholarship: SHSAA supports three students, and the Darryl Hobson Scholarship supports an additional two students for a total of five students. There will be a scholarship in the name of Georgia Taylor available at KCKCC. Last year KCKCC gave out over 900,000.00 in scholarships. Black Achievers gave out ten 1000.00 scholarships. There is money for anyone wanting to go back to school. You do not have to be a high school senior.
Alumni Room History: The Committee has all the letters they need; one will be created for Chester Owens. They still want to contact Kamesha about Sumner letter taken off the internet. The committee has everything ready, Next step is to contact a producer for price breaks and production.
We have a website domain, thanks to Marc Hobson.
Membership & Communications: We are at about 45 member. It would be nice if we could get back at least 100. Once the website is set up, people will be able to pay on website this month.
Some people want meeting to be open to all Sumner alumni. Everyone needs to pay dues to keep SHSAA visible. The next minutes should go out to everyone.
Alumni Room: Its open. There will be a September 27th event for all Spartans. The tickets are 60-65 Dollars. Granvile plans to attend. Encourage Sumner Academy Alumni to join SHSAA. Next Saturday Granvile will be speaking at the Class of 1975”s reunion at the Argosy to give Sumner History and to encourage them to join. Adrian Peerie is the president. There are displays in the foyer and auditorium of Spartans and Sabers. The room is open on the second Tuesday, fourth Thursday and upon request.
SHSAA members would like free tickets or tickets at half price for Academy sports events. Mike Hobson will check with Mr. Malone. Mike Hamilton and Granvile O’Neal volunteered to help with the newsletter.
Bylaws: Article 4 states meeting will be held at 12 noon. Edith Turnipseed moved the bylaws be changed to state that we meet at noon unless otherwise specified. General meeting start at an earlier hour. Granvile seconded; motion carried. The language bylaws will state meeting will be held at 11am, and holiday meetings will be rescheduled. Betty Maddox stated the motions are out of order.
Capital Campaign: No report.
Memorial Marker: No report
Program and Special Projects: No report.
Social Action: No report
Chief Historian: Information was sent to the Committee for the flash drive.
Foundation: No report
Convention 2026 Mike researched hotels. Margaritaville in KCK is very nice. It holds 250 people in the event space, which is genuinely nice. Rooms will be 169,99 plus a 25.00 resort fee.
Ollie Carroll moved we book the resort at that price. Betty Maddox stated the motion was out of order because Gerri Ann Hobkins was the Chair and nothing should be done without her involvement. Motion was rescinded.
